Senior Olympics: Fun, Fitness, Friends

by Editor

Better do your warm up and stretching exercise if you want to participate in the Senior Olympics in your state this summer.

Bend and stretch and get rid of those winter kinks. All the great holiday fare and other winter meals may still be riding on your hips. Getting in gear now will make for some possible wins in the state games. What a great way to have fun with your spouse, friends and neighbors. Think of all the wonderful new friends you'll meet too.

You must compete in your local games first to qualify for the state games and then it's on to the National games. Check locally to find out when the games will be held in your area. They can also give you information on when your state games will be held and what you must achieve to qualify.

You can also look up your state on the Internet and see if you can find the information that you need there.

The National Senior Games was founded in 1985 in St. Louis, Missouri. The mission of the games is to promote healthy lifestyles for seniors through education, fitness and sports. The organization serves 50 senior games and over 250,000 senior athletes across the country.

The 2003 Summer National Senior Games will be held May 27th-June 9th at Hampton Roads, VA. To learn more about the national senior games you can go to www.nationalseniorgames.net.

You'd be surprised at the wide range of activities there are. You may have thought it was all running, but there is a race/walk, basketball, table tennis, shuffleboard, horseshoes, softball, golf, cycling, 8 ball pool, swimming, Frisbee and even dance. There is also racquetball, bowling, badminton and volleyball, not to mention air gun, archery, a talent show and of course track. There may be a bingo fundraiser at your local level and will probably be a dance or party as a finally If this isn't the year you're ready to participate, join as a spectator. Ask organizers questions and watch the action. Then, perhaps you'll be ready and eager next year.

The Senior Olympics sounds like a great way to improved health, making new friends, gathering with old friends, not to mention great fun, no matter if you just compete in your local area, graduate to your state level or reach the Nationals.
